Carbothermic reduction of metal oxide waste

Carbothermic reduction of metal oxide waste

The carbothermic reduction project was developed in response to a request from Slovzink j.s.c. Košeca for the waste recovery generated during zinc oxide manufacturing. In theory, it’s a matter of reduction of zinc oxide contaminated by oxides of other metals, particularly Fe and Al, which occurs in reducing environment above zinc boiling point of zinc metal. After that, the evaporated zinc is oxidized to zinc oxide.

The procedure has been optimized to obtain the following results:

(a) the zinc oxide produced must have the appropriate physicochemical qualities

(b) thermodynamic and kinetic feasibility with the lowest possible environmental impact
